Woman granted Presidential Pardon

In observance of Guyana’s 52nd Independence Anniversary, Head of State, David Granger has granted presidential pardon to 30-year-old Shremattie Singh, who is imprisoned for the offence of false pretense.

A statement from the Ministry of Public Security on Thursday noted that the President executed his powers under article 188(2) of the Constitution of Guyana and found Singh to be a proper to receive such pardon.

Singh is an inmate at the New Amsterdam Prison.

“This Presidential Pardon shall be effective as from May 25, 2018, in observance of the 52nd Independence Anniversary of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana…the prisoner served a portion of her sentence for false pretense,” the statement noted.

According to the release, it is expected that this expression of compassion and humanity by His Excellency will result in this prisoner reuniting with her family and leading a good and useful life.
