Cane Harvester dies in Berbice accident


A 45-year-old cane harvester of Whim Village Coretyne died after he was struck down by a motorcar on the Whim Access Road Saturday morning.

Doodnauth Sookraj was riding his bicycle south along the road when motorcar, HC 4917 which was heading in the opposite direction, struck him down.

The incident occurred around 1:30am.

Sookaj was picked up in an unconscious state by the driver and taken to Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver, 26-year-old Goutam Budhoo, was arrested and a breathalyzer test conducted revealed he was above the legal limit of alcohol consumption.
