Police are investigating the murder of 51-year-old Harrinarine Samaroo, who was found with a gunshot wound to the neck at a Cattle Ranch in New Forest, East Canje, Berbice on Monday.

Samaroo, a Labourer of Betsy Ground, East Canje and his colleague, 28-year-old Frederick Bascom, were employed at the ranch, which is owned by Canadian based Guyanese, Debbie Rangadoo.

Bascom is in police custody.

The owner’s brother discovered Samaroo’s body in a crouched position about 20ft from the ranch and observed that 10 sheep are missing.

Bascom told police that he was lying in a hammock in the lower flat of the ranch when he felt “a lash” to his right hand after which he immediately jumped through a window, ran away and left Samaroo in the yard.

Bascom went to the Reliance Police Station and reported the matter. The young labourer remains in police custody as the investigation continues into the circumstances that led to Samaroo’s death.
