Canal farmers shot, beaten by bandits

A farmer is hospitalised with a gunshot wound to his arm and his 68-year-old father is nursing injuries to the head after being gun-butted by bandits at their Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara home in the wee hours this morning.

News Room understands that 38-year-old, Peter Mangal was in a scuffle with two masked men, one of whom was armed with a handgun when he was shot to his right arm.

Reports are that Peter’s father, 68-year-old Karan Mangal was in his yard when the men entered at about 02:30hrs and dealt him several lashes to his head with the handgun.

The men took the elderly Mangal upstairs where they met Peter and demanded cash and valuables.

After shooting Peter, the bandits escaped without stealing anything.
