Rose to lead national Men’s basketball team against Barbados

Eighteen year-old Stanton Rose has been entrusted with the leadership responsibility of Guyana’s senior national Men’s basketball team for their three-game series against Barbados, which tips-off on Friday (June 8) at the Wildey Gymnasium. The other two game nights are June 9 and 10.

This revelation was made on Tuesday (June 5) when the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) hosted a press briefing at Palm Court to give an update on preparations for the Caribbean Basketball Championships (CBC), which will be held in Suriname from June 15-30.

Rose, who is possibly the youngest ever captain of senior national sport team in the country, will be joined by Shane Webster, Anthony Moe, Harold Adams, Orlan Glasgow, Travis Burnett, Dominic Vicente, Timothy Thompson, Nikkoloi Smith, Chris Williams, Domair Gladstone, Travis Belgrave and Kevon Wiggins.

The Point Guard, who has been an integral figure in the national success of Bounty Colts, stated, “It is a great opportunity for me; I have some experience players who will assist me with my leadership.”

Head Coach Junior Hercules expressed confidence of a good outing by the team, which has been in involved in daily practice sessions since May 27.

Regarding the CBC, it was revealed that the James brothers- Gordon, James and Delroy- have yet to confirm their participation.

On the female side, the training squad has been trimmed to Jada Mohan, Nakeda Rodgers, Kenisha Leacock, Saffiya Greene, Racquel Campbell, Laquanta Gibson, Cliffana Hunter, Kesan Charles, Genelle Ifill, Lydia Roberts, Caron Bobb-Semple, Annalisa Barclay, Ashley Khan, Ayodele Roach, Mariam McKenzie and Damelza Nicholas.

That squad will be further reduced ahead of their departure on June 15. The Guyanese Women are in Group B with Suriname, Barbados and the Dominican Republic. Group A includes the Bahamas, Cuba and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Guyanese Men are in Group A with Suriname, St. Lucia, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, while Group B comprises Barbados, Bermuda, Antigua and Barbuda, Haiti and Montserrat.
