A driver late Friday afternoon lost control of his vehicle and careened off the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

Fortunately, the car did not make it into the Demerara River but instead landed on a pontoon where it remained stuck up to nightfall.

Emergency workers have rescued the driver and are trying to also get the car back onto the bridge. General Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, Rawleston Adams, confirmed the single-vehicle incident.

He said no injuries were reported and workers are waiting until the rush hour traffic subsides before moving the vehicle. The car was at the time heading east along the bridge and the incident occurred along the retractor span.

The driver has not been identified. Adams gave all assurance that the incident is under control. Although traffic is still flowing, vehicles are backed up in long lines on both the eastern and western sides of the bridge.
