Grove robbery: Security frees self from shoelace, police nab bandits in Supermarket

A 53-year-old Security Guard Wednesday morning escaped from captive to alert police of a robbery attempt at a Chinese Supermarket at Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

The Security Guard, who has been identified as Carl Khan of Craig Village, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was the lone employee present at the business establishment when three bandits attacked at around 04:00hrs.

News Room was reliably informed that the three suspects exited a minibus and made their way to the ‘Number One’ supermarket where they attacked the guard and tied him up with his shoelace.

They relieved the elderly man of his cell-phone and his bag.

The perpetrators then forced their way into the supermarket through a window after they used a crowbar to break a padlock from a gate.

The Security Guard managed to free himself and alerted neighbours who called the Grove Police Station, which is located just a few corners away.

Several ranks responded promptly and caught the men who were still in the process of robbing the supermarket.

A .38 revolver with six live matching rounds as well as a quantity of phone cards and over $30,000 in cash were found in their possession.

The perpetrators were identified as 27-year-old Ryan Bannister and 33-year-old Roy Smith, both unemployed of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD). The third suspect is Gerald DaSilva, 45, of Covent Garden, EBD.

Police have collected CCTV footage which recorded the entire incident; police are processing the three suspects for court.
