A serving member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was today charged with a series of offences, including physically assaulting his reputed wife and her sister.
Corporal Rondell Gouveia, 35 appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court and denied all of the seven charges.
He was released on a total of $150,000 bail and the matter is adjourned to July 9. Gouveia was represented by Attorney, Dexter Todd.
It is alleged that on June 8, 2018, at Sophia he unlawfully wounded his reputed wife, Candace Younge. He was also charged with damaging her cellphone, making use of threatening language and assaulting her.
The Cop was also charged with assaulting Younge’s sister, Alisha Martin to cause actual bodily harm and also making use of threatening language.
He faced another charge of behaving disorderly at the Turkeyen police station.
According to reports, Gouveia and Younge lived together at Sophia for over five years and on the day in question, Younge was informed by her son that Gouveia stole money from her purse.
She confronted the man over a missing US$100 and he became annoyed. The court heard that he allegedly verbally abused her and dealt her several cuffs and kicks about her body.
It is further alleged that the policeman armed himself with a knife and charged towards his reputed wife.
The allegations state that the woman ran to the verandah, locked the door and called her sister, Martin.
When Martin arrived, it is alleged that the cop hit her with a spade.
