Two persons were Tuesday morning arrested shortly after they attacked and robbed a family of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo.
The young husband was beaten and his wife raped in the presence of their two-year-old son, police sources have confirmed.
News Room was told that around 02:30hrs, the husband was awakened by a lash to his forehead and was ordered to hand over all his money. He reportedly handed over $12,000 and his wedding ring to three perpetrators.
One of the bandits subsequently placed a knife to his neck and ordered that he lay on the floor.
During the ordeal, it is alleged that the woman was raped. The assailants also threatened to kill the couple’s son who was screaming and crying throughout the robbery.
The men then forced the family into their (victim’s) car and attempted to take them at a canal, police sources said.
However, the vehicle broke down and the men abandoned their mission. The family was taken to the hospital where they were treated and discharged.
Police are on the hunt for the other suspect.
