A 45-year-old former policewoman appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday, charged with demanding money from a 73-year-old man she allegedly kidnapped.

Natasha Singh of Crane Old Road, West Coast Demerara appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly and denied that on June 18, 2018, at Georgetown, she demanded with menace the sum of $200,000 from Mohammed Yusif with intent to steal.

She was represented by Attorney-at-law Everton Lammy-Singh, who told the court that his client is a businesswoman and is the sole breadwinner of her family.

With no objection by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh, the woman was released on $60,000 bail by Magistrate Daly. She was ordered to return to court on July 20.

According to reports, the defendant is known to the victim and on the day in question, she went to his home and kidnapped him.

It is alleged that Singh placed the elderly man in a car, took him to Leonora, WCD and confiscated his documents and cell phone.

She used the said phone, called his son and made the demand for the money. It is alleged that the son reported the matter to the police.

It is further alleged that the woman demanded that the son meet her at the Criminal Investigation Department, Headquarters in Eve Leary, Georgetown to hand over the ransom.

It was there that three CID officers arrested her.
