Rape accused found hanging in cell

An investigation has been launched following the death of a prisoner in custody at the Leonora Police Station at about 05:30am Monday.

Dead is 61-year-old Bagatram Jailall of Lot 48 Ocean Garden, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.

Police said he was arrested on Sunday for the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl which reportedly occurred on June 29, 2018.

News Room understands that the prisoner was discovered hanging from the lockups window grill. He allegedly used his shirt to commit the act.

There were four other prisoners in the cell.
