A Venezuelan national was today sentenced to six months imprisonment for stealing from a businesswoman at Water Front, Port Kaituma.

Luis Marques appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and admitted that between July 1 and July 2, 2018, he stole $410,000 from Sabrina Johnson.

With the aid of an interpreter, Marques told the court that he took the money to buy clothes.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that on the day in question, Marques went to the woman’s shop to buy a backpack and she left him alone in the shop after someone called her outside.

When she returned, Marques paid for the backpack and left

The businesswoman then later discovered that the money was missing from her shop and reported the matter to the Port Kaituma Police Station.

Based on investigations, Marques was arrested and police found the money stacked inside the backpack.

The Prosecutor also disclosed that there is no document purporting that Marques entered Guyana legally.

After serving his sentence, Marques will be deported.
