Guyanese Alphonso cops Caribbean U-13 squash title

Guyanese Michael Alphonso turned in a flawless performance to win the Boys Under-13 title at the Caribbean Junior Squash Championship in Kingston, Jamaica, on Tuesday morning.

The youngster disposed of all his opponents in the group, sealing the title with a comprehensive 3-0 sweep of top ranked Aidan Parris of Barbados. Alphonso won the final 11-3, 12-10, 11-3.

“It was really intense during the entire tournament, beating the Caribbean number two to advance to the finals last evening (Monday), then beating the number one ranked player 3-0 for the National Caribbean title today (Tuesday)…it was overwhelming to win,” Alphonso told News Room from Jamaica after the win.

Alphonso advanced to the final with a hard-fought victory over number two seed, Alex Stewart, also of Barbados. The Guyanese won 11-7, 11-1, 6-11, 11-7.

Alphonso had earlier defeated Jamaica’s Aman Dhiman 11-5, 11-0, 11-1 and Bermuda’s Ethan Roserea 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 on his way to the title.

Alphonso’s trip to the championship has been made possible with support from E-Networks Inc., Burger King, Innovations America and True Value Pharmacy and Gift Centre, Charity, Essequibo Coast.
