A two storey house was completely destroyed while another was saved following a fire at Lot 58 Clifton Settlement Corentyne Berbice.

The fire, believed to be electrical in origin, began at approximately 11:20pm on Wednesday.

Fifty-three-year-old Sunita Jagdeo, who lived and operated a small confectionery shop at the now destroyed house, said she was asleep when she was awoken by loud sounds.

The single parent shared the property with her two children and her brother.

“I hear something ah gee pat pat like a gunshot, same time me daughter say ‘mommy fire ah tek place’ so I didn’t catch meh self was me house and when me check me see fire all over”.

Damages to the interior of the second house

The family escaped the blaze and with the help of neighbours, formed a bucket brigade.

The neighbours managed to save the house next door from total destruction.

The woman estimated her losses in the region of $6M while noting that only on Wednesday she purchased stocks for her shop, all of which were stored in a storeroom of the bottom flat of the house.

She noted also the Guyana Fire Service Rose Hall Branch was informed but arrived when the building was completely destroyed.
