A man will be spending the rest of his life in jail after he was found guilty of having sexual intercourse with a nine-year-old girl.
Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Wednesday imposed two life sentences on Navindra Badal, called “Uncle Ravi”.
In 2016, he was charged with two counts of rape of a child under the age of 16.
He denied the charges and was on trial in the High Court, represented by attorney Maxwell McKay.
Badal was given life imprisonment on each of the two rape charges and he only becomes eligible for parole after serving 45 years.
Counsellor, Celeste Mullin explained to the court that the young girl expressed sadness over the incident and wanted the man to go to jail for what he did to her.
In handing down the sentence, Justice Sewnarine-Beharry took into consideration the fact that the victim was just nine-years-old when she was raped, leaving physical, psychological and emotional scars.
