Over forty prohibited items along with 146 ziploc bags of marijuana were found Tuesday at the New Amsterdam Prison during an impromptu search.

According to Director of Prison (ag), Gladwin Samuels, members of the Police Force and Prison Officers conducted a search at the prison between 16:45hrs and 18:12hrs and six cell phones, 146 Ziploc bags of Narcotics amounting to 292 grams, 12 phone chargers, five cigarettes, eight Improvised weapons/ Jucker, three SIM cards and seven lighters were discovered.

Samuels said this is yet another in a series of searches to make the prison safer.

He was also quick to point out that efforts are constantly being made to prevent the items from entering the prison.

Recently, Superintendent Deoraj Gyandat, Officer-in-charge of the New Amsterdam Prison told reporters that a major challenge to fighting smuggling is posed by the close proximity of residential areas around the prison.

“Especially at the back of the Prison…persons are literally living at about 10 to 15ft off the prisons so persons sometimes access those areas…So the challenge is that most of the time we do not really see directly who hurls these parcels and it’s very difficult to apprehend the suspects,” Gyandat explained.
