A 25-year-old vendor was on Wednesday charged and released on $350,000 bail for raping a 12-year-old girl.

Stephon Belle of Port Kaituma Water Front was not required to plea to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

The charge alleged that on July 14, 2018, at Water Front, Port Kaituma, he raped the child.

He did not have a lawyer in court. The matter was transferred to the Mathews Ridge Magistrate’s Court for August 7.

According to reports, both parties are known to each other and on the day in question, Belle invited the teen over to his home. He allegedly forced himself on the teen and raped her.

The child became fearful and told a social worker who later reported the matter to the police.
