Four men remanded in $158M ganja bust
Four men arrested by the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) with an estimated $158 million worth of marijuana have been denied bail.
The men are Jason Dhanpat, InderjeetBeepat, Jermain Hikel and TeairreAckeem Cush. They were arraigned before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Vigilance Magistrates Court where the charge of trafficking in narcotics was read to them.
The men were arrested after the ganja was found in a wooden vessel and a taxi at Hope/Nootenzuil Lowlands, East Coast Demerara on Saturday.
Custom Anti-Narcotics Unit Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the charges and the amount of drugs involved. The men complained in court about being beaten by CANU officers while Cush said he had malaria.
CANU said the drugs were being carried in a boat and a taxi and weighed an estimated 116.2 kilogrammes.
