Two killed in East Coast accident

Police are investigating an accident which occurred Sunday night on the Bee Hive Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) claiming the lives of two persons.

Dead are 19-year-old Varsha Khemraj and 37-year-old Satyanand Harripersaud of 97 Cane Grove, ECD.

Police said Khemraj was the passenger in motor car PSS 9153 owned and driven by Harripersaud.

Initial investigations revealed that at about 22:15hrs, motorcar PSS 9153 was proceeding east along the northern carriageway when it collided with the front right side of motorcar PTT 5270, driven by a 24-year-old resident of Atlantic Gardens, ECD, and heading in the opposite direction.

The driver of PTT 5270 told the police that the motorcar driven by Harripersaud suddenly swerved into his path. As a result, his vehicle careened north into a canal.

Khemraj and Harripersaud were removed from the vehicle in an unconscious state and were taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of PTT 5270, who was unhurt, is in custody assisting with the investigation.

A breathalyzer test was conducted and no alcohol was detected in his breath.
