Mahaicony teen killed after struck off bicycle by minibus

A Mahaicony teenager was killed when he was struck off his bicycle by a minibus Monday night.

Dead is 17-year-old labourer Ricardo James of Recess Village.

Police said the accident occurred at around 21:15hrs on the Good Faith Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

Reports are that the minibus BTT 5273, driven by a 59-year-old resident of the neighbouring village of La Raisonable, ECD, was proceeding west along the southern carriageway while James was proceeding in the opposite direction.

Police said the bus driver claimed the cyclist suddenly swerved north into his path and collided with the front left side of his vehicle.

Because of the impact, the front wheel of the bicycle was dislodged, and the cyclist fell unto the roadway he was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver, who passed a breathalyzer test, is in Police custody assisting with the investigation.
