Regional U-19 Cricket: Sinclair, Umroa give Guyana advantage on day one

Guyana spinners Kevin Sinclair and Kevin Umroa combined to take seven wickets to bundle out Leeward Islands for 116 on the opening day of Cricket West Indies’ Regional Under-19 Three-day championship in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday.

The off-spin of Sinclair accounted for 4-19 in 11 overs, while his fellow Berbician took 3-28 with his left-arm spin in 11.2 overs, which sent the home side packing in 48.2 overs at Arnos Vale.

New ball pair Joshua Jones (2-27) and Qumar Torrington (1-19) were the other wicket-takers with Jemuel Cabey hitting the top score of 19. Other contributions came from Demar Benta (18), Mikyle Louis (14) and Zwandi White (13).

In response, defending champions Guyana reached 58-2 in 13.2 overs when rain brought a premature end to the day’s play. Alex Algoo (14) and Sachin Singh added 19 for the first wicket in quick time before Algoo perished to Javin Spencer, who has accounted for both wickets thus far.

The stylish Joshua Persaud and Singh took the score pass the 50-mark when Persaud departed for 19. At stumps, Singh was unbeaten on 23 (2x4s), while captain Bhaskar Yadram was on three.

Elsewhere, Windward Islands made 238 all out at Park Hill Playing Field with Teddy Bishops hitting 79 off 164 balls with seven fours and one six. Kimani Melius made 53 off 56 balls with seven fours and two sixes.

Bowling for Trinidad and Tobago, Navin Bidaisee took 3-29 off 11 overs, Justyn Gangoo 3-34 off 10.1 and Jayden Seales 2-36 off 13. In reply, Trinidad and Tobago were 1-0.

Barbados meanwhile, were 175-5 against Jamaica on a rain-affected day at Sion Hill Playing Field. Opener Shian Brathwaite missed out on a ton, falling for 87. His innings spanned 113 balls and included 11 fours and two sixes.

Fellow opener Nico Reifer made 39 and Kadeem Alleyne 35. Bowling for Jamaica, Raewin Senior has so far picked up 4-43 off 19 overs.
