Two Russian nationals are in custody as Police continue to probe video footage showing them assaulting a Guyanese miner.

Police Headquarters said that following the circulation of the video on social media of “a confrontation and assault of a Guyanese by two foreign nationals, a thorough investigation has been launched.”

The Russians were not named by the Police.

A Police team travelled Quart Stone, Cuyuni in Region Seven where the incident is said to have occurred.

According to the Police, the two Russian Nationals are employed by West Bank Demerara Gold Inc., which is licensed to operate in Guyana and are sworn Supernumerary Constables and authorized to carry firearms.

“The Administration of the Force further wishes to indicate that the Supernumerary Constables in question, being employees of the aforementioned company, ought to have been attired in the prescribed uniform approved by the Force’s Administration for that Company, and not as seen outfitted, in the video footage,” Police headquarters stated.

The Ministry of Natural Resources on Monday said it ordered an immediate probe into the incident.

According to the Ministry, the video clearly shows the foreign national “behaving in an aggressive, hostile and condescending manner” towards the Guyanese.

“The images are disturbing on many levels and raise issues about security, the authority of foreigners to carry arms and conflict resolution in the mining sector,” the Government statement outlined.
