A fire of unknown origin completely gutted an Enmore, East Coast Demerara, house on Wednesday evening, leaving neighbours with more questions than answers.

The unoccupied Lot 184 Beezie, Enmore house went up in flames at around 21:15hrs, according to Deoraj Nauth, who resides next door to the one storey wooden and concrete structure.

“No one was living in the home; it has been abandoned for over a year. There is no electrical connection to the home,” Nauth, who believes the fire was the act of arsonists, explained.

Nauth said he was looking at cricket on television when another neighbour called him and said “fire next door.”

“By the time I pulled the curtain and looked, the fire was engulfing from the bottom up,” he informed.

Nauth was critical of the fire tenders, which he said turned up without water and “they could have done a lot more better if they had turned up with water.”

“And they left the place not fully cool down. The fire start back at 12:30hrs last night. Neighbours had to form a bucket brigade (to bring it under control),” Nauth added.

According to a police statement, the home is owned by overseas-based Guyanese Rampearie Gunpat, called Subaggie, aged 82.
