A 33-year-old Guyana Goldfields Inc. employee appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan Friday, charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

It is alleged that on August 08, 2018, Jamal Lowe of Farm, East Bank Demerara (EBD), drove minibus BVV 2848 in a dangerous manner at Covent Garden, EBD which resulted in the death of 43-year-old Franklyn Dover.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge; attorney Clevaun Humphrey in his bail application told the court that Lowe is the sole breadwinner for his two children and that he did not speed or drove recklessly on the day in question.

Police Prosecutor, Vivian Adolph objected to bail and cited the nature and gravity of the charge.

The Chief Magistrate granted the man $600,000 bail and suspended his driver’s license.  He was also ordered to report weekly to the Providence Police Station and the matter is adjourned to August 28.

Police had stated that the accident occurred at about 20:00hrs and that Dover succumbed some three hours later. The accused had claimed that he was proceeding south when Dover ran across the road.

Dover received injuries about his body and was rushed to the East Demerara Regional Hospital in an unconscious state; he was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.
