Sixty-seven-old Abdool Jamil was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl.

The sentence was handed down by Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the High Court.

“My penis dead,” Jamil told the court in his defence, denying that he could have committed the act.

According to the charges, on May 30, 2014, and June 2, 2014, Jamil raped the girl.

Justice Beharry in her ruling noted that the accused showed no sign of remorse and on the grounds of the serious nature and prevalence of the offence, sentenced him to life imprisonment for the two charges.

The sentences are to run concurrently and Jamil will not be eligible for parole until after serving 45 years behind bars on each charge.

According to reports on May 30, 2014, the 10-year-old was at the home of a relative when the accused lured the child to his home on the West Coast of Demerara.

He raped her and then repeated his action on June 2, 2014. However, on the last occasion, the child ran away and told a relative of what transpired.

The victim, now 14, through a statement which was read in court by Counsellor and Court Support Officer Celeste Mullin, explained that she had flashbacks of the incident and wanted to see Jamil imprisoned.
