Two taxi drivers from the East Bank of Demerara today appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan charged with the illegal possession of ammunition.

Amishwar Veersammy, 30 of Herstelling, and Davindra Sammy, 21 of Farm, were charged separately.

The charge alleged that on August 19 at Farm, the men each had a 9mm ammunition in their possession when they are not licenced firearm holders.

They were released on $50,000 bail each and ordered to report to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for September 10.

According to reports, on the day in question, ranks from the Providence Police Station went to Farm after someone reported that two men in parked cars were discharging their loaded firearms into the air.

Upon arrival at the scene, the ranks found the two accused in motorcar PVV 1984 and PWW 9864 which were parked alongside each other.

Both vehicles were searched and a live .9mm round was found in each car.

The police, however, claim that they did not find any firearms.
