Third Limacol Football tournament gets cracking on Thursday

The third edition of the Limacol Football Tournament will get underway on Thursday (August 30) and the organisers are expecting some exciting action when 12 teams from various sub-associations within Demerara will contest for top honours at the Ministry of Education, Carifesta Avenue.

The tournament, which brought some pulsating action on the pitch over the past two years, was launched recently at the New Guyana Pharmaceutical Company Inc. head office at Farm, East Bank Demerara.

Co-Director of the Petra Orgnisation, Troy Mendonca, thanked the company for its continued support and contended that tournaments like these aid in the overall development of the nation’s football.

Zulfikar Ali, Secretary of New GPC Inc., also gave his take on the impact the successful tournament can have on young the generation of footballers and encouraged persons to come out in their numbers to support, since admission to all round-robin matches will be free.

Wayne Forde, President of the Guyana Football Federation, posited that such a tournament will go a long way in reshaping Georgetown’s football, which, until the introduction of an Interim Management Committee, was stagnant.

On Thursday from 17:30h, Pele Football Club battle Northern Rangers, followed by Camptown and Buxton Stars at 19:30h, then Police against Mahaica Determinators from 21:30h.

The tournament will be contested on a round-robin basis with the top two teams from the three groups and two best third place finishers advancing to the knockout stages, which should conclude on October 6.

The winners will pocket $600,000, second $300,000, third $150,00 and fourth $75,000. The defending champions are Western Tigers, who won 1-0 against Guyana Police Force FC.

Teams: Guyana Police Force, Georgetown Football Club, Pele, Sunburst Campton, Riddim Squad, Beacon United, Santos, Northern Rangers, Mahaica Determinators, Buxton Stars, Pouderoyen and Grove Hi-Tech.
