Hikers Cadets impressive; Cadogan scores six for Bingo Spartans

The Hikers Cadets were boosted by the presence of visiting overseas-based Guyanese national Jerazeno ‘Skillaxe’ Bell, who boosted the side to two victories on the weekend as the Bounty Paper Towels Second Division Leagues continued at the St Stanislaus College ground.

The match on Saturday against Old Fort was not an easy victory however, as Old Fort remained in close contention throughout and had several opportunities of their own.  With Bell opening his team’s account in the 15th minute, Old Fort’s Theodore Thierens would even the scores again one minute later to keep the intensity of the match in high gear.

The Hikers Devin Munroe however, would break the deadlock for the second time on the halftime buzzer to give the Hikers a 2-1 lead.  The second half saw some entertaining hockey evidences by the hum of the spectators as several near misses held their attention.  Cove Bowman however, would put the game beyond Old Fort with a 36th minute shot to give the Hikers Cadets a 3-1 victory.

The Hikers Cadets would make light work of Saints Under-19s the following afternoon with an 11-1 victory.  Despite a surprise opening goal from Hilmar Chester to put Saints up by one, they would see no further success in a match dominated by the experienced Hikers.

Both newcomer Christopher Sumeer and veteran Brian Asregado of the Hikers Cadets would manage a helmet trick (four goals), while Jerazano Bell scored two and Colonel Heywood added a single.

GCC Sequel came from one goal down to steamroll their junior counterparts Bounty GCC by 4-1.  While young Jason Gomes managed to score an opening goal for Bounty, the Sequel’s experience, coupled by fine goalkeeping from Kevin Spencer, titled the game heavily in their favour.  Striker Medroy Scotland rebounded a penalty corner strike in the 9th minute to tie the game, while Devin Hooper and a double from Philip Fernandes saw the Sequel to the 4-1 win.

Old Fort rounded out the men’s matches of the weekend with a 9-2 beating of Senior Saints.  After opening their account in the fourth minute through Theodore Thierens, Old Fort raced ahead to a 3-0 lead before Saints could get on the scoreboard to make it 1-3 at the half.  While Saints would manage only one more goal in the second half, Old Fort managed six more for the 9-2 finish.

Omar Hopkinson with a helmet trick led the table while singles came from Old Fort teammates Thierens, Christopher Low-Koan, Warren Williams, Jael Gaskin and John Abrahams.  Yonnick Peters and Kwesi Lewis were the scorers for Senior Saints.

GCC Sequel and Old Fort lead the points table each with 15, while Bounty GCC follows with nine, the Hikers Cadets and Saints Under-19s both with six and Saints Seniors three.

The Bingo Spartans put in a dominant performance against the Woodpecker Hikers in the Ladies competition, winning 6-1. Youthful striker Abosaide Cadogan was unstoppable as she scored all six of her team’s goals, while the Hikers lone goals came from midfielder Shondelle Durant.

Saints completed the weekend’s matches with a win over the Old Fort ladies by 3-0.  Tekeisha Deleon was the star of the show with a pair of goals for Saints while teammate Cherub Autar added a single.

Pizza Hut GCC and Saints lead the points standing with seven each, while the Bingo Spartans sit in second with six points followed by a tie between Old Fort and the Woodpecker Hikers with one point each.

Matches continue every weekend at Saints ground until September 30.
