Four prison officers have been interdicted from duty and will be charged after it was found that they smuggled a bottle of rum and a pack of cigarettes into the Lusignan Prison.

“A firm stand must be taken against the smuggling of banned items into prisons,” Gladwin Samuels, acting Director of Prisons stated in announcing the charges.

Samuels said “in a situation where Prison Officers agree and work together to smuggle items in, it would be hard to detect the smuggling.”

He said that the Standard Operating Procedures would see Prison Officers conducting searches to verify that persons are without banned items when entering the Prisons.

But he said this this system will only be effective when there is no collusion.

From reports received and investigations conducted, the four Prison Officers on Sunday last  worked together and smuggled a bottle of rum and a pack of cigarettes into the Lusignan Prison to give to prisoners.
