Top teams from North America will head to Guyana in late October for the eighth annual Guyana Softball Cup, and the organisers are bracing themselves for another highly competitive tournament.

Organised by the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA), the event has grown to become the most popular and well-attended softball cricket competition in Guyana.

Overseas teams usually build their annual schedule around the Guyana Softball Cup, while local sides have always yearned to lift the title in the two categories- Open and Masters.

This year, the competition will be rolled out on October 26-28, with the first two days being earmarked for preliminary matches, followed the various category finals on the last day.

As has been the case over the years, the final day will start at 10:00h and conclude with the Open final under floodlights at the Demerara Cricket Club, Queenstown.

Chief Coordinator of the event, Anil Beharry, told News Room on Wednesday that all systems are in place for a grand event. He confirmed a significant increase in the number of teams that have registered, amounting to about 30.

Beharry noted that the GFSCA would once again be working overtime to ensure a quality competition, both on and off the field. He added that the GFSCA’s long-standing corporate partners have committed to another year of sponsorship of the Guyana Softball Cup.

Further details of the competition will be divulged at the official launch, slated for Thursday (September 27) at the auditorium of the Demerara Cricket Club where Social Cohesion Minister, Dr. George Norton, is expected to deliver feature remarks.

In the 2017 competition, Ariel Speedboat XI defeated Boots All Stars in a closely-fought Open final, while Floodlights XI crushed Regal by nine wickets in the Masters final.
