A 40-year-old resident of Melanie, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was crushed to death just after 04:00hrs on Saturday by a motor lorry on the Good Hope public road, also on ECD.

The driver was subsequently arrested and is in Police custody assisting with the investigation.

According to information received, Cyon Caunders was walking along the northern side of the road when the driver of motor lorry GRR 6081, owned by China Railway First Group Guyana Inc., alleged that the man suddenly walked south across the road into the path of the vehicle.

The 28-year-old driver of Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) told the police that he immediately applied brakes but due to the short distance, the front of the vehicle came into contact with the pedestrian.

As a result of the impact, Caunders fell onto the roadway causing the lorry to crush his head.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver reportedly abandoned the motor lorry and fled to his residence where he was subsequently arrested by the police.

A breathalyser test showed that his alcohol level was 0%.
