Another year, another championship for the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) at the Lennox Blackmore National Intermediate Boxing Championships, which concluded at the weekend at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

After three days of intense boxing and 26 fights, GDF is still the best gym at the annual event, organised by the Guyana Boxing Association.

GDF’s reign extends from since 2015 and once again Republican Gym (prisoners), Vergenogen Boxing gym and Forgotten Youth Foundation (YBG) had no answers.

They won 11 medals, five goals and six sliver in which Quincy Boyce was the best elite boxer and Shaquille Wright for youth.

Sunday’s final had 10 exciting bouts, one of which saw Wright dispose of Junior Hyman in 1:30s of the second round in the youth flyweight bout.

Clinton Clarke won unanimous decision over Albert Thomas in the Bantamweight, while Jamal Eastman stopped Andrew Griffith in the first round (1:47s) of the lightweight clash.

Seon Murray did similar to his GDF compatriot Quincy Boyce with another first round stoppage of the welterweight bout.

A unanimous decision went in favour of Royden Grant over Orlando Norton in the middleweight, while light heavyweight clash went to Astion Nils with a first round stoppage of Frank McCrae.

Attention will now turn to the national senior championship, which will be held in mid-November from which a team will be selected for encampment for the Caribbean championships, which Guyana hosts from December 6-9.
