Rogue officers will not be “dumped” in other depts. – Top Cop
Police Commissioner, Leslie James has undertaken to ensure that no department within the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will be referred to as a “dumping ground” where rogue officers are transferred.
It is the practice of the Force to transfer officers implicated in wrongdoings to other departments, which are deemed less important, but the Top Cop says this practice needs to stop.
“If a particular rank has committed a breach, that rank will be dealt with; if the rank’s behaviour is so chronic, that issue will be addressed, he or she would not be transferred to departments and then after a while the department is referred to as a dumping ground,” Commissioner James is quoted as saying in a police release.
Commissioner James was at the time interacting with ranks of Police ‘A’ Division at the Brickdam Station Compound on Monday where he addressed their concerns.
Just last month, a Police Constable stationed on the Essequibo Coast was transferred to another department after theft charges against him were dismissed by the court.
When Head of the Special Weapons and Tactic (SWAT), Deputy Superintendent Motie Dookie was implicated in alcohol smuggling, he was initially transferred to another department.
However, the Top Cop assured that the Force’s Standing Orders will be revised.
“This is a revolving world we are living in, a revolving society and what might have been good then may not necessarily be good now, so that is a work in progress,” he is quoted as saying.
