Man who killed young miner claims self-defense

A 35-year-old man was on Monday remanded to prison for the murder of 20-year-old gold miner, Daniel George.

Parasram Ramnaught of Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo appeared before the Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan and was not required to plea to the indictable charge.

It is alleged that on October 16, 2018, Barakat Landing, Mazaruni River, Ramnaught murdered George.

The unrepresented man told the court that at the time of the incident he was being beaten by four men and acted in self-defense.

The Chief Magistrate remanded Ramnaught to prison until October 31 when he will appear at the Bartica Magistrates Court.

According to a police report, George and Ramnaught were imbibing at a shop at Barakat Landing, Mazaruni River, when an argument erupted over cigarettes.

The 35-year old used a knife and fatally stabbed George to his abdomen and right eye.
