An 88-year-old shopkeeper was on Friday afternoon found dead in his Truimph Village, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home.

The elderly man, Dhroowah called ‘Joe’ was found with his hands bound with a hand towel and mouth gagged with a rag in his kitchen at around 16:00hrs.

News Room understands that the elderly man’s body was discovered with a laceration to the right side of his head by a neighbour.

Reports are that Joe, who lived alone, was last seen by neighbours at around 11:00hrs when he closed his grocery shop which he operated at the bottom flat of his home.

However, when the shop did not reopen at 15:00hrs as is customary and calls went unanswered, a neighbour jumped the fence and made the gruesome discovery.

The northern door to the home was found open while the upper flat of the house and the shop were ransacked.

While it cannot be determined if anything was taken, robbery is suspected to be the motive of the attack.

An investigation is ongoing.
