Drunk mother arrested after abandoning nine-month old baby

A 23-year-old woman of Baramita, Region One was taken into custody after she showed up to collect her baby, who was found abandoned at the Police Station.

An infant boy, suspected to be nine-months-old, was found lying at the entrance of the Baramita Police Station Thursday morning just before first light, police said in a statement.

The child was said to be naked but wrapped in a blanket. He was greeted by Constable Kevin Morgan when he arrived at work.

“The unusual discovery by the hinterland policeman, caused him to promptly take the smiling child into his arms, cuddled it and after a warm bath the beautiful baby slept for a while,” Police Headquarters noted.

Police said the young lady informed that she left the child in the care of someone last night because she was intoxicated, and she could not remember who she left the baby with.

Subordinate Officer-in-Charge of the Station, Corporal Jennifer Griffith

The Subordinate Officer-in-Charge of the Station, Corporal Jennifer Griffith and other ranks quickly pooled and purchased clothing and pampers for the child before he was taken for a medical examination at the Health Centre, where he remains at this time, in good condition.

As the police officers, together with concerned residents, were making stringent efforts to locate the parents, the 23-year-old woman showed up just around 13:00hrs to claim the baby.

The woman was taken in police custody and an investigation has been launched.
