Following investigations into increased criminal activities in Central Georgetown, two teenagers appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan Tuesday, accused of snatching the cell phone of an under-cover police officer during a sting operation.

Leon Gittens, a 19-year-old block-maker of East Ruimveldt and Akacie Primo, a19-year-old Labourer of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara were jointly charged with attempted robbery at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on December 7, 2018, at Avenue of Republic, Georgetown, they attempted to rob Julius Bowlin of his $80,000 cell phone.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield asked that the teenagers are remanded based on the seriousness of the charge.

The court heard that on the day in question, the cop was under-cover in a sting operation following a crime spree in the Georgetown area when Primo snatched his phone and ran away.

It is alleged that Gittens was heard in giving orders to commit the crime.

The court was told that both men are facing similar charges ranging from larceny to armed robbery.

They were granted $15,000 bail each and ordered to report to the Brickdam Police Station every Monday and Friday. The matter is adjourned to December 21, 2018.
