Taxi driver remanded on $2.2M Ganja charge
A 38-year-old taxi driver who was allegedly caught by Police at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara with $2.2M worth in cannabis was remanded to prison on Monday.
Ben Cumberbatch of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara appeared before Senior Magistrate Faith McGusty and denied that on December 13, 2018, at Little Diamond, he had 12 pounds of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
He was represented by Attorney-at-law Melville Duke, who in his unsuccessful plea for bail, told the court that the drugs were not found in the possession of his client nor did he have knowledge of the drug.
Police Prosecutor Ceon Blackman told the court that ranks intercepted Cumberbatch in his Toyota Allion car at Little Diamond and found the drugs hidden in a spare tyre inside the trunk.
Magistrate McGusty remanded Cumberbatch to prison until January 7, 2019, and transferred the matter to the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
