Ryan Persaud called “KK”, 22, of Williamsburg and 24-year-old Shivnarine Jainarine called “Sammy” of Train Line Dam, Port Mourant were both sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 61-year-old Jagdat Ramcharran called “Ronald” of Bloomfield Village.
A third person, Kerwin Hintzen called “Rattie” of Rose Hall Town was also charged and pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter; he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in February 2018.
Jagdat, who was a Security Guard at the Iscon Hari Krishna Mandir located at Block 6 Williamsburg Corentyne, was murdered during the course of a robbery between January 6 and January 7, 2013.
His bound and battered body was found at the Temple after a worshipper visited for early morning devotion.
Persaud and Jainarine were represented by Attorney-at-Law, Arudranauth Gossai and Mursalene Bacchus, respectively while the State’s case was presented by Prosecutor, Mandel Moore.
According to Moore, the two men along with others broke and entered the place of worship and murdered the man as they ransacked the Temple and stole several items.
In addition to the life sentence, the High Court Judge ordered the Prison Welfare Department to ensure the youths receive counselling.
The young men will be eligible for parole after serving 45 years of their sentence.
