A fire of unknown origin destroyed the Administration section of the Diamond Secondary School, East Bank Demerara at around 1:30hrs Monday morning.

When News Room visited the school, officials from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) could be seen doing their investigation to ascertain the origin of the fire.

The administrative building housed the offices of teachers, the Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher along with the Computer Laboratory and the Library.

The Ministry of Education in a statement Monday disclosed that the fire was contained to just the administrative building and noted that school will reopen as scheduled in January 2019.

A check made by the fire service revealed that there was no issue with the electricity supply in the area at the time of the fire.

The Education Ministry is currently in talks with the school’s administration and regional officials to ensure that there is a smooth transition into the new school term.

The Diamond Secondary School caught the attention of the media just recently.

According a Kaieteur News report on December 3, 2018 it is alleged that $107,000 went missing from a safe, money that was supposed to be used for the student’s graduation ceremony.
