11-Y-O killed in mining pit collapse
Police are investigating the death of an 11-year-old, who was killed after a mining pit collapsed at Creek Backdam, North West District, Region One at about 22:30hrs on Thursday, December 27.
Police said Tyrone Tyrel DeSouza, a school drop-out, along with nine others, entered the Mining Operation owned by Terrence Yarde at about 6:00hrs.
Police investigation revealed that DeSouza and his companions proceeded to undermine a section north of the pit in search of the gold.
At about 22:00hrs, a section of the mining pit collapsed and trapped Tyrone Tyrel De Souza below the mud and water.
The other persons managed to escape and returned at about 09:00hrs on Friday when they managed to recover to body of the child.
Yarde had closed his operations on Christmas Day and travelled to the Port Kaituma sub-region where he resides.
Yarde’s operation is situated north east of the backdam and his dredges are located in a pit which measures about 80 feet in depth and 40 feet in width.
The body is presently at the Port Kaituma Hospital mortuary awaiting a post mortem.
