Two women, 51 and 54 years old were on Saturday afternoon killed in an accident on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.

According to police information, 51-year-old Elsa Fernandes and 54-year-old Melva Lucus, both of Grand Sand Road, Soesdyke East Bank Demerara (EBD) were standing on the western parapet of the road at about 16:45hrs when they were struck down by a speeding motor car.

Driver of the motor car, a 28-year-old male of Kuru Kururu Village, / Linden Highway told investigators that he swerved west to avoid hitting a motor car which was proceeding in the opposite direction in his lane, overtaking another vehicle.

As a result, he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a wooden bus shed on the western parapet of the said road and further collided with the two female pedestrians.

The women were picked up in an unconscious condition by the police who took them to the Diamond Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

The bodies are at Lyken’s Funeral Parlour awaiting post mortems while the driver who passed a breathalyzer test, is in custody assisting with the investigation.
