A  man who was wanted for the fatal stabbing of  26-year-old Guyana Defence Force Lieutenant, turned himself into the Police on Wednesday morning.

The man has been identified as Kamal Matthews called ‘Son’ of Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder. The suspect was accompanied by a lawyer.

The GDF officer, Mark Bagot was on holiday visiting family in Phillipi Village when he was stabbed following an argument at a shop in the Village at around 20:00hrs on Sunday.

The proprietor of Chunku Grocery, Daneshwar Gabbar told News Room that Bagot and a friend were hanging out at the shop when an acquaintance identified as ‘Son’ joined them.

It is alleged that Lieutenant Bagot ordered a ‘round’ of drinks when ‘Son’ insisted on paying for his own but the Army rank said he will pay for the drinks.

News Room understands that this led to an argument between the two when Bagot’s friend intervened and tried to quell the matter.

However, it is alleged that ‘Son’ whipped out a knife and stabbed Lieutenant Bagot several times in the region of his chest.

He was rushed to the Port Mourant hospital but was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A post-mortem is expected to be performed on Thursday.
