Pensioner found dead in canal believed murdered

A post mortem conducted on the body of a 76-year-old which was fished out of a canal in the Durban Backlands area, Georgetown, has found that he died from brain haemorrhage.

According to the police, an autopsy done by Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh on Monday found that the man, Cyril Nova Persaud died as a result of “multiple blunt trauma to head compounded by compression injuries to the neck.”

He also suffered a blunt trauma to the abdomen and bleeding from the nostril.

The partly decomposed body of Persaud of 45 Atlantic Ville, East Coast Demerara was fished out of the canal at about 11:00hrs on Sunday.

The body was discovered by residents in the area.

The man was identified by an NIS pension book that was found close to his body.

Persaud is said to have been missing since January 11, 2019.

A police investigation is ongoing.
