The organisers of Guinness Greatest of the Streets championships have plans to host a National League, possibly consisting of nine teams.
The Guinness Streetball has engrossed a massive following and has reached a ten-year existence in Guyana. The 2019 championships will commence on Friday, this time with the West Demerara/East Bank Zone.
It was at the launch of the said zone, organisers disclosed they are toying with the idea of having a National League after the National Playoff.
“We feel we have our sub-meets then our national championships and to crown it off to say you are the real Greatest of the them all. It is not being confirmed yet, we need to work on logistics, but from all indications it will be a go,” Lee Baptiste, Banks DIH Guinness Brand Manager, stated.
Currently, the championships are staged in West Demerara, Linden, Berbice, East Coast Demerara, Georgetown and Bartica.
While they are calls for expansion, Baptiste said they are open to expansion, but it must be able to maintain the quality. The Brand Manager is hoping that the tournament continues to galvanise communities.
“We want to showcase the positive vibes the players are showcasing through football and the hope is that once we can bring to the public’s viewing, the players will be forced to operate at standard where persons in the community can look up to them.”
More so, given the regional championship has come to a halt, Baptiste did not write off inviting foreign teams to Guyana, but stated it is not currently in the pipeline and if they should do it, they will be considering the longevity of such a venture.
