Sarah Chance of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, was remanded to prison Wednesday by Magistrate Faith McGusty for allegedly smuggling 23 grams of cannabis to a prisoner who was in the lockup of the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Chance, a 33-year-old mother of three, denied that she smuggled the illegal drugs, which were hidden inside the sole of a pair of boots on January 23.

The woman did not have legal representation and told the court that she was only trying to help out a friend by dropping off the boots to the prisoner.

Chance said she picked up the boots from someone in Albouystown, Georgetown.

But Police Prosecutor Annalisa Brummel said the accused knows the prisoner as they have been in communication for over three months.

As such, the Prosecutor objected to bail.

The court heard that when officers at the court told Chance they needed to search the boots, she began to act in a suspicious manner.

The mother was remanded to prison until February 19, 2019.
