Police are investigating a serious accident involving the Force’s vehicle attached to Police Commissioner Leslie James and a Canter Truck which occurred on Saturday afternoon on the Covent Garden Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

At the time of the accident, the Top Cop was inside the jeep PSS 4796 with its siren on heading in the direction of Georgetown, while the Canter GWW 9079 was also heading in the same direction.

Police Headquarters said that at around 14:45hrs, the Canter “suddenly swerved from east to west and stopped leaving the rear portion on the driving lane,” and as a result, the left side front of the jeep collided to the right–side rear of the Canter.

The Canter then spun around and collided with a parked lorry while the Police jeep collided to the rear of another vehicle that was parked on the western side of the road.

As a result of the impact, the Top’s Cop’s Personal Assistant, Superintendent Roberts along with the driver of the Canter Basdeo Lalchan, 37, and the occupant, Janathan Ramkellwan, 24, received injuries.

Commissioner James was being driven by Corporal Mark Smith who tested negative for alcohol in his system.

The occupants of the Canter are at the Georgetown Hospital nursing broken bones and legs while Superintendent Roberts is admitted at the Mercy Hospital with injuries to his left shoulder.
