A young man who sustained serious head injuries while in Police custody at the Sparendaam Police locks-ups died at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Monday night.

Dead is Kallicharran Sawack of LBI, East Coast Demerara and the Police are unable to give the family a proper explanation as to how he sustained those injuries.

Prior to his death, Sawack was in a critical condition at the hospital.

His family had reported him to the police after he broke some windows and verbally abused his mother and sister.

But the next day when he was scheduled to appear in court, the family was told that he was hospitalized.

According to the family, the Police are claiming that Sawack was behaving in a disorderly manner in the lock-ups and so they placed him in a cell alone when he allegedly “injured” himself.

But the family is disputing this explanation by the police. They claim that the young man is sane and there is no reason why he would hurt himself.

News Room understands that the Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting an investigation into the matter.
