A 27-year-old resident of El Dorado Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB) is in police custody after the car he was driving – HC 8140 – struck down Joel Jacobs, 41, of #28 Village, WCB.
Police Headquarters say the accident occurred at around 15:30hrs Saturday on the Onverwagt Public Road Bridge.
Police say that the hire car was proceeding east on the northern side of the said bridge and the pedal cyclist was proceeding in the opposite direction on the southern side of the bridge. 
The driver alleged that in the process of passing the cyclist, the rider suddenly swerved from south to north and in so doing came into contact with the front of the right side of the car.
The cyclist was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver and no alcohol was detected.
