King, Gaffor and Gomes reign supreme at Powerlifting Novices

Space Gym’s Tremel King, Akram Gaffor and Shelly-Ann Gomes were the standout performers at the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation’s season-opening National Novices/Juniors Championship.

The future of power lifting was given a stage to showcase their talents at the St. Stanislaus College and they certainly did not disappoint, producing some robust performances.

King of Space Gym was the best lifter in the Male Open Classic 93kg class; he chalked up a total of 637.5kg with a best squat of 230kg, best bench press of 150kg and best deadlift of 257.5kg.

The best lifter novice accolade in the Female Open Classic went to Gomes of Buddy’s Gym with a total of 287.5kg, including a best squat of 100kg, best bench press of 50kg and best deadlift of 137.5 kg.

Gaffor powered his way to the Best Lifter (Equipped) in the Novices Open category, competing in the 59kg Class.

His best squat of 135kg, bench press of 85kg and deadlift of 160 kg (total weight 380kg) and Wilks points total of 391.172 were enough to land him the title.

There were also some individual brilliances from Ramzan Mohamed, who broke records in the 120kg Junior Classic (Squat 230kg, Bench 135kg, Deadlift 225kg- Total 590kg); Askhay Goukaran 93kg Sub Junior Classic (Squat 142.5kg, Bench 85kg, Deadlift 195kg- Total 422.5kg); Jermy Indarjit 66kg Sub Junior Classic (Squat 162.5kg, Bench 80kg, Deadlift 205kg- Total 447.5kg) and Lisa Oudit 84kg Open Classic (Squat 135kg, Bench 65.5kg, Deadlift 152.5kg- Total 353kg).

Over 30 athletes competed at the one-day championship.
